Transmission Cable Accessories
Ryan Sales supplies G&W Electric high voltage cable termination and joint systems for transmission cable from 69kV through 500kV IEEE. The line covers outdoor, GIS and transformer terminations, premolded joints and accessories for legacy pipe-type and fluid-filled systems, with rep support for transmission utilities and EPCs in Texas and Oklahoma.
Send the voltage, ampacity and fault duty. A rep will narrow it down.

How to choose transmission cable accessories
Cable system: solid dielectric or fluid-filled
The cable technology already in the ground decides the product family. New transmission circuits are almost all solid dielectric XLPE or EPR, served by the Python and PAT families. Legacy high-pressure fluid-filled (HPFF), low-pressure fluid-filled and self-contained fluid-filled circuits need accessories built for those systems: ATA/ATL Outdoor Terminations and LPP Joints both run through 345kV.
Termination interface: outdoor, GIS or transformer
Define where the cable ends before choosing the termination. An overhead-to-underground transition or open-air substation uses an outdoor termination; the Python Outdoor PAT Style Termination covers 69 to 345kV with porcelain insulators. For 115 to 138kV, the PAT130C Dry Type Outdoor Termination uses a dry premolded body, which removes insulating fluid from the termination. Connections into gas insulated switchgear or a transformer use the Python PATR, or the SSC160 Plug-in Dry GIS and Transformer Termination to 500kV, with plug-in/plug-out available to 245kV IEC so the cable can be separated from the GIS for testing or maintenance.
| Product | Interface | IEEE voltage | Cable |
|---|---|---|---|
| PAT130C | Outdoor, dry | 115-138kV | XLPE, EPR |
| Python PAT | Outdoor, porcelain | 69-345kV | XLPE, EPR |
| Python PATR | GIS / transformer | 69-345kV | XLPE, EPR |
| SSC160 | GIS / transformer, dry plug-in | 138-500kV | Copper or aluminum, 240-2500mm2 |
| ATA/ATL | Outdoor and GIS | Through 345kV | HPFF, LPFF, SCOF |
Voltage class and qualification testing
Match the accessory's rating to the system voltage and confirm it carries the type and prequalification testing the utility requires. Python Premolded Joints are prequalification and type tested per IEC 62067 at 230, 345 and 500kV and 100% routine tested at the factory. Check conductor size and insulation diameter as well, since premolded bodies fit a defined range.
Joints and transitions
Where a circuit mixes old and new cable, a transition joint avoids replacing the whole run. TJNT140 Transition Joints connect dissimilar cable systems through 138kV, letting a utility splice new XLPE into a legacy circuit during upgrades or repairs. On fluid-filled systems, LPP Joints serve the same splicing role through 345kV and support ongoing maintenance of circuits that are not yet due for replacement. Bring the existing cable data, including conductor size, insulation type and any as-built records, to the first conversation so the transition can be engineered correctly.

Frequently asked questions
Dry vs fluid-filled outdoor terminations?
Dry outdoor terminations use a premolded rubber stress cone with no insulating fluid, and fluid-filled terminations surround the stress cone with oil or silicone fluid inside an insulator. Dry designs remove leak risk and fluid maintenance and are faster to install. Fluid-filled designs have a long track record at the highest voltages. G&W's PAT130C is a dry outdoor termination for 115 to 138 kV, and its ATA/ATL terminations serve fluid-filled pipe-type systems through 345 kV.
What is a plug-in GIS termination?
A plug-in GIS termination connects high voltage cable to gas-insulated switchgear by plugging a prepared cable end into an insulator already installed in the GIS. The GIS and the cable can therefore be installed and tested separately, and the cable can later be unplugged without opening the gas compartment. G&W's SSC160 is a dry termination that plugs in and out up to 245 kV IEC and meets IEC 62271-209.
Can you joint XLPE to pipe-type cable?
Yes. XLPE cable can be jointed to pipe-type cable, such as HPFF cable, with a transition joint. The joint connects the conductors and seals off the pressurized dielectric fluid on the pipe-type side, so the solid-dielectric XLPE side stays dry. It also controls electrical stress at both insulation systems. This is often done when a utility replaces part of an aging pipe-type circuit. G&W's TJNT140 transition joints handle this through 138 kV, and its LPP joints serve pipe-type systems through 345 kV.
