Cable Splices & Terminations
Ryan Sales supplies every medium voltage cable splice and termination a distribution job needs, from G&W Electric slip-on, cold shrink and PILC transition kits to Richards MFG cold shrink splices and disconnectable joints. The range covers 15kV through 46kV, and our reps support utilities, contractors and plants across Texas and Oklahoma.
Send the voltage, ampacity and fault duty. A rep will narrow it down.

How to choose cable splices & terminations
Cable type: extruded or PILC
Identify the cable on both sides of the joint first, because it rules out most options. Modern XLPE and EPR cable takes cold shrink or premolded accessories. Paper-insulated lead-covered (PILC) cable needs purpose-built kits that manage the oil-impregnated paper and the lead sheath. When a PILC section is being replaced, PILC Splice Kits and Transition Joints connect it to new extruded cable in tape or epoxy-molded designs up to 35kV.
Splice, termination or disconnectable joint
Choose the accessory by what the connection has to do later, not only today. A straight splice is permanent and lowest cost. A disconnectable joint lets crews separate and reconfigure circuits in a vault without cutting cable; the Disconnectable Joints (JSCS Series) provide multi-way 600A aluminum or 900A copper connections for high-density underground networks. Terminations end the cable at a riser pole, transformer or switch.
Voltage class and test levels
Select the kit for the system voltage class and confirm its test levels meet the utility's specification. Richards' SSC Series Cold Shrink Splice is rated to IEEE 404 with BIL of 110, 150 and 200kV for the 15, 25 and 35kV classes, and up to 40kA for 10 cycles short-time. G&W's PAT Style Slip-On Terminations extend to 46kV for outdoor riser work.
| Product | Type | Voltage | Cable |
|---|---|---|---|
| PAT Slip-On Termination | Outdoor termination | 15-46kV | XLPE, EPR, PILC, lead-sheathed |
| PM Series Cold Shrink | Termination and splice | Up to 35kV | XLPE, EPR |
| SSC Cold Shrink Splice | Inline splice | 15-35kV | MV power cable |
| JSCS Disconnectable Joint | Multi-way joint | 15-35kV | 600A Al / 900A Cu |
Installation method and crew experience
Favor the method that your crews can repeat consistently in the field. Cold shrink needs no torch or special tooling, and range-taking designs like the SSC cover more cable sizes per kit, which simplifies storm stock. The Pre-Molded PM Series Cold Shrink Accessories bring premolded stress control for fast installs. PAT terminations arrive factory-assembled with built-in stress relief, so no hot compound is poured. For three-conductor and armored cable, field-assembled Capnut and Sodertite Terminations remain the practical choice.
For PILC replacement work, read PILC to XLPE transitions, and see our separable connectors for equipment connections.
Frequently asked questions
Cold shrink vs heat shrink?
Cold shrink accessories arrive stretched over a removable core and shrink onto the cable when the core is pulled, so installation needs no torch or heat. Heat shrink tubes are applied with a torch or heat gun and shrink to fit. Cold shrink applies steady pressure and avoids open flame in vaults and plants. Heat shrink costs less and stores longer because it is not held stretched. Richards MFG's SSC Series splices and G&W's PM Series accessories are cold shrink.
How do you transition PILC to XLPE cable?
PILC cable is joined to XLPE or other extruded cable with a transition joint. The joint connects the two conductors and stops the PILC cable's impregnating oil from migrating into the new cable. It also controls electrical stress at the ends of both insulation systems and carries the lead sheath's ground through to the new cable's shield. Qualified splicers and careful sheath preparation are essential. G&W Electric offers PILC splice kits and transition joints up to 35 kV in tape and epoxy-molded designs.
What is IEEE 404 / IEEE 48?
IEEE 48 covers test procedures and requirements for high voltage AC cable terminations, and IEEE 404 covers cable joints (splices) for extruded and laminated dielectric cable. Both set design tests such as AC withstand, impulse (BIL), partial discharge and short-time current, which show that an accessory can handle its voltage class. When specifying accessories, check compliance with the matching standard. Richards MFG's SSC Series cold shrink splice is rated to IEEE 404.
