Medium Voltage Equipment for Data Centers in Texas and Nationwide

Ryan Sales specifies the medium voltage equipment between the utility interconnect and the white space: substation transformers, SF6-free gas-insulated switchgear, metal-clad lineups, pad mount and dry type transformers, and battery storage. We work with data center developers, EPCs and electrical engineers in Texas and nationwide.

Built for how data centers are powered

A data center's power path runs from high voltage utility service down to 480 V distribution, and each step has its own equipment decisions and lead-time risk. Demand is climbing fast: data centers used about 4.4% of total U.S. electricity in 2023, and the DOE expects that share to reach roughly 6.7% to 12% by 2028 (DOE, December 2024). Here is how the JST and G&W Electric equipment we represent fits along that path.

1. Utility interconnect and substation transformers

Large campuses usually take service at transmission or subtransmission voltage and step down on site. The JST Power Transformer covers 5 MVA to 600 MVA (with fans) at up to 500 kV, with on-load or no-load tap changers and mineral oil, natural ester or synthetic coolant. For smaller blocks or modular builds, the JST Medium Voltage Packaged Unit Substation combines switchgear, transformer, metering and power factor correction in one factory-tested package. See all power transformers and packaged substations.

Order these early. Wood Mackenzie's Q2 2025 survey put average power transformer lead times at 128 weeks and switchgear at 44 weeks (reported by POWER, January 2026).

2. Medium voltage switchgear: GIS or metal-clad

The main MV switchgear distributes power from the substation to the campus. Gas-insulated switchgear saves floor space. The JST J20N Dry Air Gas-Insulated Switchgear is rated 38 kV, 1200 A and 31.5 kA with 170 kV BIL, uses SF6-free dry air insulation, and takes up to 75% less space than air-insulated gear. The J10N covers 5 kV lineups at 600 A and 20 kA. Both are UL listed and carry IEC and IEEE internal arc classification. Browse gas-insulated switchgear.

If the owner prefers air-insulated gear, the JST J100CLAD Metal-Clad Switchgear covers 5–15 kV at up to 3000 A and 25–50 kA, with integral racking. See metal-clad switchgear and breakers.

3. Unit substations and pad mount transformers

Outdoor pad mounts step MV feeders down at each building or power block. The JST Three-Phase Liquid-Filled Pad Mounted Transformer runs from 75 kVA to 5000 kVA at up to 34.5 kV, is UL listed and DOE compliant, and is built in Wytheville, Virginia. See pad mount transformers.

4. Dry type transformers

Indoor and close-coupled substations near the load often call for dry type units. The JST Cast Resin Dry Type Transformer covers 300 kVA to 45 MVA at up to 72.5 kV primary, with partial discharge at or below 10 pC. The JST VPI Dry Type Transformer covers 100 kVA to 14.5 MVA at up to 25 kV with NOMEX insulation. For LV PDU transformers, grounding transformers and reactors, see specialty transformers and all dry type transformers.

5. Battery energy storage

BESS can support peak management, ride-through and grid services on campus. The JST Grid-Scale Battery Energy Storage System scales from 1 MWh to 1000+ MWh with direct grid connection up to 38 kV and IEEE 1547 compatibility. Smaller sites can use the JST Commercial & Industrial BESS. See battery energy storage.

Why specify through Ryan Sales

A rep brings the factory to your design table without adding a layer between you and the manufacturer. Ryan Sales has done that for more than 40 years, since 1984, when Jack and Piper Ryan founded the company to sell G&W Electric in Texas. Today the management team includes their two sons, both engineers.

  • Factory access. We put your engineers in direct contact with JST and G&W Electric application and production teams.
  • Application engineering. We help size ratings, match fault levels, and compare GIS with metal-clad or cast resin with VPI before you lock the one-line.
  • Lead-time answers. We get current factory lead times and production slots, so the schedule rests on real dates.
  • U.S.-built pad mounts. JST opened a transformer plant in Wytheville, Virginia, building liquid-filled pad mount transformers for utility and data center demand (JST/Business Wire, May 2026). Wood Mackenzie estimated that 50% of U.S. distribution transformer supply came from imports in 2025.
  • SF6-free option. JST's dry air GIS gives owners a compact switchgear choice without SF6.
  • Startup support. We stay involved through delivery, installation questions and energization.

Frequently asked questions

Who sells medium voltage switchgear for data centers in Texas?

Ryan Sales, a manufacturers' representative in Magnolia, Texas since 1984, supplies data center medium voltage switchgear in Texas and nationwide: JST J20N (38 kV) and J10N (5 kV) SF6-free dry air gas-insulated switchgear, JST metal-clad switchgear and G&W Electric padmount switchgear. Call (281) 363-1106 or send your one-line for a quote.

Where can I buy SF6-free switchgear in Texas?

Ryan Sales supplies two SF6-free options in Texas and on data center projects nationwide: G&W Electric Trident solid dielectric switchgear (15 to 38 kV) and JST J10N and J20N dry air gas-insulated switchgear (5 kV and 38 kV). See the solid dielectric vs. SF6 guide.

Does Ryan Sales support data center projects outside Texas?

Yes. Ryan Sales serves utility, industrial and contractor customers in Texas and Oklahoma, and takes data center projects nationwide. We work with developers, EPCs and electrical engineers on MV switchgear, transformers, substations and BESS wherever the site is. Call (281) 363-1106 or request a quote to start.

What is SF6-free switchgear, and why do data centers specify it?

SF6-free switchgear uses an insulating medium other than sulfur hexafluoride, a potent greenhouse gas. JST's J10N and J20N use dry air insulation at 5 kV and 38 kV and keep the small footprint of gas-insulated gear, up to 75% smaller than air-insulated switchgear. Owners with emissions targets or SF6 reporting concerns often start with this option.

Should I use dry type or liquid-filled transformers in a data center?

It depends on where the transformer sits. Dry type units such as JST cast resin and VPI designs suit indoor and close-coupled substations where fire risk and oil containment matter. Liquid-filled pad mounts are common outdoors at each building or power block. See our dry type vs. liquid guide for the full comparison.

How long are lead times for data center transformers and switchgear?

They vary by product and change often. Wood Mackenzie's Q2 2025 survey reported power transformers averaging 128 weeks and switchgear 44 weeks industry-wide. Factory lead times shift month to month, so ask us for current dates on the specific ratings you need.

Can battery energy storage connect directly at medium voltage?

Yes. The JST Grid-Scale BESS uses an H-bridge cascade topology that connects directly at up to 38 kV, which can remove a step-up transformer from the design. It scales from 1 MWh to over 1000 MWh, is IEEE 1547 compatible, and ships in modular containers.
